If you are facing the any of the below mentioned issues while launching or playing the game like:

  • The game crashes with a message “Far Cry 5 stopped working” after launching or in game.
  • The game crashes during loading, main menu or playing.
  • Game crashes while switching to other window or exiting the game. Keeps on showing the message “preparing to launch”.

You should go through this section to resolve the problem:

1) Priority:

Change the priority of the game to “high” in the task manager. To do this, try the steps give here:

  • Open “Task Manager” (by right clicking the toolbar and selecting “start task manager” or by pressing “CTRL+ALT+DEL” and selecting “Start Task Manager”.
  • Switch to “Process” or “Details” tab depending upon the version of Window installed on your system.
  • Look for the Far Cry 5 process (.exe file of the game) in the list and “right-click” it.
  • Hover on “Set priority” and select the priority to any of the given choices.
  • Click “change priority” on the confirmation message.

Also, do the same for chat clients, firewalls, video recorders, and overlays.

*It might be possible that system would not allow you to change the priority of some processes.

2) Windowed Mode:

Try playing the game in Windowed mode. Press “ALT+Enter” in the game to switch to windowed mode. If that doesn’t work, try these steps:

  • Go to the location:
    “C:\Users\Username\Documents\My Games\Far Cry 5\GamerProfile.xml”
  • Open the file using notepad or any other text editor.
  • Search for the line “WindowMode”.
  • Press “Ctrl+F” and type “WindowMode” in the search box. Press “Find next” and it will point you to that line.
  • Try changing the value of the parameter to “0” or “1” so that it would look something like this:
    WindowMode=”1″ or WindowMode=”0″
  • Save and close the notepad.

If your game is always starting in Windowed mode even after changing the settings. Try changing the value to “2“.

3) Dual Graphic Cards:

If your system have dual graphic card, try disabling one of them. Use only the high performing GPU. Some people have reported the crash due to dual Graphic cards on the system.

4) Cut Scenes

While playing Far Cry 5, there are cut scenes in between the game play. Try not skipping the cut scenes. Don’t press keys on keyboard or click mouse during cutscenes. It will help you in two ways:

  • First, you can prevent crashing of the game.
  • Second, you will be knowing the actual story of Far Cry 5.

Personaly, i watch all cut scenes and videos in between game.

6) Graphics Tweak:

Try lowering down the graphic settings from the graphic card control panel as well as in-game graphic settings including Anti-aliasing, Anisotropy. Try disabling Anti aliasing completely. Also try Enabling/disabling Vsync. Lower down the environment settings, texture settings and all other setting that are very heavy on performance.

7) Patches and Updates:

Try updating the game with the latest updates available. It may automatically solve many issues related to the game.

8) AMD Phenom

Some reports says that Far Cry 5 is not able to run on AMD Phenom processors. If you are able to run, thats a miracle. Hope, Ubisoft is working upon that as i am still not sure if they have resolved it yet or not. Please leave the comment if you have been able to launch it in systems with Phenom processors. It will help other gamers.

9) Video Player:

Make sure no other video player or application is open in the system. If yes, close them before launching the game. Also, make sure the web browser don’t have youtube or other video websites opened in any tab. Its safe to close all the running processes before playing Far Cry 5.

Try updaing with the title update rolled by Ubisoft. It will automatically fix the crashing issue related to gamers Profile. You may need to restart the Steam in order to get the update.

11) Roll Back:

Try rolling back your graphic card drivers to the stable versions. This may help in resolving the crashing issues in Far Cry 5.

12) Overclock:

If your Graphic card is overclocked, try re-setting it to the “factory settings”. GPU Overclocking can enhance the performance of the game to some extent but in case of crashing or freezing of the game, overclocking must be disabled.

Try playing the game with UPlay in-game overlay off or if on steam, disable steam in-game overlay. To do that, do these steps:

15) UPlay:

Try launching the game from Uplay first before Steam client.

16) Color Depth:

I can’t say whether its a solution or not but someone said it worked for him so i considered it worth mentioning here. Make sure your desktop or laptop color depth is set to True Color (32 bit).

17) Game Configuration File:

Try editing the system.cfg file of the game. To do that, follow the steps given here:

  • Go to the location:
    C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Crytek\Far Cry
  • Open “system.cfg” file using notepad or any other text editor.
  • Look for the following lines:
    e_overlay_geometry
    r_WaterReflections
    r_WaterRefractions
  • Change the value to 0 so that it looks something like this:
    e_overlay_geometry =”0″
    r_WaterReflections =”0″
    r_WaterRefractions =”0″
  • Save the settings and close the Notepad.

18) Launcher:

Try launching the game directly from the executable file (.exe) inside the game directory. Sometimes, launching from the game shortcut or autorun menu may result in crashing (Don’t know how but got this solution while browsing so i mentioned it here).

19) Virtual Software:

If you have installed virtual drive programs such as Virtual CD, CloneCD, Nero, Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% etc. Make sure they are not running when you play Far Cry 5. Disable them completely. Unmount any virtual drives associated with far Cry 5. If such software are not being used by you as Windows is now able to open virtual drives (iso files) using OS itself, consider unistalling them.

Disable SLI/Crossfire for Nvidia/ATI cards if using. It may help in fixing the crashing issue in the game.
